This map of the Apollo 11 landing site shows the Lunar Module Descent Module in scale and relative to terrain features. Produced during the time of the Apollo Missions it shows the placement of the flag, instruments, even the foot paths covered during the entire Lunar EVA. It will be interesting to compare this to the full resolution LRO images later. For now, the comparison with 1.4 meter per pixel images are plenty interesting.

I mixed 7.5 ounces by weight of Alginate with 26 ounces by measure of water, stirred till is gelled and began spooning it over Kiera/s face. I carefully worked it around her nostrils so she could breath rather than do the straw thing. Alginate is the stuff orthodontists use to make impressions of your teeth before you get braces. It does not stick to skin, but it records every pore and wrinkle. I applied it directly over Kiera's hair and we got the mold off with no tears. After the Alginate had gelled, I applied a thick coating of layers of plaster bandage to make a solid shell, or "keeper", so the Alginate mold wold keep its shape. When the plaster was hard enough, I helped Kiera sit up and we worked the mold off her face. It was a challenge to get Kiera's hair disengaged from the mold with out tearing the Algernate, but we managed. (By the way, if anyone ever tells you they want to make a plaster mold of your face, even if they're going to butter you up with petroleum jelly... RUN AWAY. The true face of misery has twenty pounds of hot steaming plaster hanging from its eyebrows and eye lashes while a frantic mold maker tries inserting thin,sharp cutting implements to cut the hairs loose and save the mold.)

Here is the mold. The Alginate has a working time of only about ten minutes, so you have to work fast. Then I mixed the cement. I had a box of Cement All from Home Depot and the pigment sitting around, to I gave it a try. It seemed as though it might be tougher than plaster. I have a black rubber bucket that I bought at a tack and feed store that's great for mixing plaster and cement. (Correction... cement sticks to the black rubber bucket... plaster does not.) When the cement hardens you just bang the bucket against the ground and break the cement or plaster out. When mixed, the cement is a pretty loose mixture, but begins to thicken in about fifteen minutes.

I gathered a couple buckets of water, some silicone rubber mixing bowls, measuring cup, paper towels, scissors, plaster bandages, cement (because I was out of plaster and I wanted to try cement), cement pigment, my digital postal scale, plastic cups and the pound bag of Alginate to make the actual mold. Once you start this process, the clock is ticking, both with the short working times the materials require AND the tolerance of the person being slowly entombed in the Death Trap Sarcophagus of Doom. Hence, there are no step by step photos of all the goop going on.

I coated the mold when the cement was loose, then coated strips of this fine-meshed hardware cloth to lay into the cement, like paper mache, to give it added strength. I wanted to try to make a shell and I needed that kind of controll since the mold wasn't the type you can just pour casting agent into. It worked out pretty well.

Here's some of the stuff. The green silicone rubber mixing bowl was from a set of three, on sale at Home Goods for $12, which is an incredible deal. These are great for mixing smaller amounts of plaster because nothing sticks to it, so clean up is simple. That's the black rubber feed store bucket. I've had the plaster bandages for decades, bought at a medical supply company. I'm not sure they still make these anymore. The Cement All and pigment and hardware cloth from Home Depot.

After a bit of grinding to take the rough edges off. That "drip" under her left eye is actually her eyelashes. Were this plaster, you could whittle off details like that. In cement, there is a course grit just under the surface if you carve down that far. It would have looked like she has a crusty spot on her lower eyelid. Your choice is, a crusty spot or that glop.

Rather than just make a death mask, I wanted to try to capture Kiera's head and shoulders. In the comfort of our living room floor, I took some corrigated cardboard and cut a silhouette that fit Kiera's contours perfectly. This was to establish a plane against which to form the mold. We decided to do the dirty work in our back yard in the shade of an Elm tree. ( These photos were taken with the Ryobi Durashot. I am thinking it does not capture color very well, another down side. )

It was evening, and I laid the casting on the grass and took a shot. There was no direct sun light cast on the piece, only diffuse light from the sky. The lighting on Kiera was very flat so I played with the values in Photoshop and I kind of like the result.

After about an hour I flipped the mold over and started pulling it apart. Here's the plaster keeper off and the blue Alginate exposed. You only use the Alginate once. When pouring plaster, you might be able to get a few castings out of a mold, but the molds do not keep. Being water based, they will dry out and shrink and crack up. When you're done, throw it away. There is a product that has many of the same properties as Alginate. It's called Moulage. You melt it in a double boiler and apply it directly to skin. It melts at around 100 degrees, so there's a level of discomfort your subject must be willing to endure. Moulage can be reused, too. You just chop up the mold and melt it again. Here's the casting right out of the mold. The pigment in the cement is nicer than the sterile white of plaster. It gives it a warmth that seems more alive. The thing about life castings is that even though the end product has all the living detail of the subject, there's something inherently cadaverish about the final product. This casting will require clean up on her face and some grinding around the edges. Being cement, you could put this outdoors. You could make a silicone mold from the casting and then cast fiberglass or resin from that.

The cement build up was an inch and a half to three inches. As it thickened it went through a stage where it had the consistancy of clay and I was able to smooth the back side with my fingers.

LAUSD built a $250,000,000 showplace highschool, the Media Magnate School. This structure is simply meant to dress up down town (with public education picking up the tab?) It has no other function. It's pretty. Reminds me of KRONOS, from a mid 20th century Science Fiction.

Today, for the first time, I climbed onto The Rock and demystified this phantom. There's a metalic disk nailed and glued to the rock at about a 45 degree angle. Why? I also found that there was another disk on the Eastern-facing side of The Rock. Perhaps it's a surveying thing to study tectonics. The Rock might just run aground on a beach in Japan in 20 million years or so.

There were lots of starfish clinging to the rocks all around. And there were the usual Limpits, Chitons, Black Turban Snails, Barnacles, Mussels and Hermit Crabs.

The variety of tide pool life wasn't exceptionally diverse. No real surprises, except for a couple of large clams and this dead lobster. We've never found one this entact. There were several dead Sea Cucumbers, a variety of crabs we're not used to seeing. One girl said her father had caught an octopus, but he was returning it to the water as she told us.

The Mystery is that at certain times, you can see a gleam of light in the center of the main bulk of that rock. The gleam almost looks like a hole straight THROUGH the rock, revealing daylight through it. I couldn't believe that the rock was thin enough for a hole that small to penetrate all the way through, but this phantom persisted year after year. What IS it?

Julia and I walked onto the beach and found the lowest tide we've ever seen here in all the years we've been coming. It was low enough that people were able to walk out to The Rock, which is usually pretty far off shore. I'd always wanted to check out The Rock, perhaps even solve The Mystery!

The drive home was wonderful until we hit the blunt reality of civilization: rush hour in Santa Barbara. I left until today (Friday) to sort out the gear and vacuum the Quest. On our trip we saw Several lizards, numerous beetles, bugs and caterpillars, a Horny Toad, Scrub Jays, Steller's jays, Acorn Woodpeckers, Hairy Woodpeckers, California Towhee, California Quails, California Condors, Turkey Vultures, rabbits, deer, a mole, a Bob Cat (first siting of a cat in the wild!) Coyotes, and had a chorus of wild turkeys greet us each morning. On Tuesday, a rainy day, we drove to Monterey Bay and visited the aquarium ( cost nearly as much as a day at Disneyland!!!), but the drive there and back was like going to Valhalla!!! This part of California, this time of year, at least to a LA-bound city boy, is deliriously beautiful!!!

Pinnacles National Monument is a wonderful, obscure campground with quiet, respectful campers who are bold enough to drive right through the gaping maw of the San Andreas Fault to get to the park gates. This time of year everything is green and the wild flowers are in bloom and the day time temperatures are perfect for hiking. I've always been puzzled by a certain type of camper that I see, and I think I finally put their story together on this trip. Couples, no kids, upwardly mobile, nicely dressed, minimal camp gear, usually a car, like a Lexus. They pull in, set up a tent, prepare a lite meal, bottle of wine, sit up talking, then retire. The next morning, they sleep in far later than anyone else. Once up, they break camp and are gone. This is a definite pattern. On this trip, I observed a two sites like this, then imagined their Singles Ads... "Love the outdoors, hiking, camping, going to movies, Jazz, Kenny G, have a great sense of humor." It all makes sense now.

Since we don't backpack, I use the eleven inch spikes from the hardware store. To secure the bottom corners, I crossed three spikes, driving them into the soil, then used it like a boat cleat. Didn't pull out once inspite of the moisture.

We used to play with Horny Toads when we were kids in Dallas. Now, they're rarely seen in Texas because of pesticides or fire ants or something. This was the first one Julia had ever seen. She was very excited.

The other side of the equation, is that it gets cold at night, and it rained. I put up a rain shelter in the rain. After freezing our toes off the first night, my bed-time attire became three pairs of socks, jeans, t-shirt, denim shirt, light jacket, fiber-fill winter coat, one of those alpaca Andean hats with the ear-flaps tied under my chin and my sleeping bag zipped ALL THE WAY UP!!!

There was some sort of volcanic activity that was responsible for the deposits that created these formations. Small surprise, considering that the two lane road leading to the park runs down a long, narrow valley that is the ACTUAL gullet of the San Andreas Fault. There are small farms and ranches throughout the valley. If the San Andreas finally let go with The Big One, the Ranchers would probably have to use The Space Shuttle to retrieve their cattle.

Julia wasn't interested in walking back through the caves, so we took the Rim Trail back to our starting point.

This originally appeared to be a black frame. It was a hand-held exposure made on steps paralleling a waterfall in the cave. I jiggled all the Photoshop knobs I know to make an image emerge. This was an amazing place.

Some places were absolutely dark, in others, shafts of light dimly lit the way. It was chilly and you could hear the sound of water rushing through.

An aeroplane built by Clement Ader was called "Avion III", whose form emerged from a design philosophy common before The Wright Brothers accomplishments, "If a true understanding of the principles of flight evades you, make a craft that closely resembles something that is known to have the ability to fly." Monseur Ader built this masterfully crafted vehicle, with a 16 yard wingspan and two 30 hp steam engines. His inspiration, clearly was a certain flying mammal, and even his propellor blades did not dare to alter their design to advance significantly beyond the feather's suggestion of function and form.

Chris Bonner sent this to me. He took this from his car on his way to work in Phoenix. I thought I got it. I just blew it up in Photoshop, and it's not what I thought it was at all. At first glance I thought the message read, "Passengers, Speak Up Against Rockless Driving" ... meaning, "assert you rights to listen to music that validates your youthful undeveloped ego by demanding constant saturation in music that creates the illusion of affirming your rebellious and edgy cultural superiority." ... only presented in a manner that could easily be mistaken for a civil authority safety warning. Seemed kind of clever. I thought it was an ad for a local rock station. Then I blew it up so I could actually read it and found that it IS a civil authority safety warning. The guy need a pipe.
